Fine Dining Restaurants: Eureka 89

Hello!

Welcome to another fine dining restaurant review.

Today, we are heading to Eureka 89, in Melbourne's CBD.

I headed down to Melbourne for a weekend of food, wine, weddings and staying up late talking shit with Tara - much needed & so fun!

We had a 6pm reservation, which we ended up being early for, so we headed up to the Sky Deck first to check out the view whilst we waited.  If you are in Melbourne & you want to check it out, it's maybe a little touristy, but it's kinda cool.

Once we headed upstairs, we started on our 7 course degustation with matching wines.  As always, we started with a cocktail & then got going.

So what did we think?

With The Fat Duck excluded (because that sits in a league all on its own, so far), Eureka 89 took the top spot on my fine dining restaurant list.  Everything about it was exquisite!  The food was incredible, the wines were a perfect match, the service was friendly & knowledgeable, the view was spectacular.  My only complaint was that the restaurant was perhaps a little dark (we had to use the lamp on the table to take pictures haha), but it didn't affect our experience at all.  Loved. It.

Fine Dining Restaurant Mini Review:

Was it worth the money ($85pp for the degustation, plus matching wines): the most affordable degustation to date

Did I love every dish: Actually no... beetroot is not my jam, but I gave it a red hot go.  Everything else was incredible.

Favourite dish: Probably the crab or the duck

Matching wines: Yes - & SO worth it.

Anything I didn't like: Just the beetroot dish - but if you love beetroot, then it would be amazing too.

Would I go again: Absolutely yes.

If you are ever in Melbourne, put this restaurant at the top of your list.

Fine Dining Restaurants: Nel.

Hello!

Hope you're all going well.

This week, we're getting back to fine dining restaurant reviews!  Tara & I skipped one last year, so we did 2 really close together to catch up.

In today's blog, we visit Nel. Restaurant, in Sydney's CBD.

Tara popped up to Sydney one weekend in March & we took the opportunity to get my (belated) birthday dinner in.

I think the thing that I love the most about Nel. is that they have a menu that changes regularly throughout the year.  It not only keeps the environment relaxed & lovely, but also makes you want to keep going back for more!

You can check out their current menu here - at the time of writing, they are on their 'Once Upon a Time' Disney inspired menu!

We were treated to their Australian inspired menu, which we matched with wines (we did a weird thing where we shared one matching wines... because my body is doing something weird with some wines & I didn't want to risk a migraine... anyway).

Here is the delightful menu that we enjoyed.

We started out with a cocktail...

Then got stuck into the selection of appetisers...

Beetroot nest, whiting schnitzel

Fine dining Bunnings sausage

Tin can bread

We then got stuck into the main event...

Avocado on toast

Skippy kangaroo

Fire spiced kingfish

Mary had a little lamb

Dessert then rounded out the evening beautifully...

 Fairy bread

Lamington

Tim Tams (with birthday sparkler)

So what did we think?

I really loved it!  Incredible food & wine aside, the atmosphere & the service was just perfect.  Even though it is a fine dining restaurant, it just felt so relaxed & lovely.  Our server was really chill about the fact we wanted to share the matching wines (lol) & was really knowledgeable & passionate about the menu.  It really was just a delightful experience.

Was it worth the money ($118pp for the degustation, plus matching wines): yes!

Did I love every dish: I did!

Favourite dish: Way too hard to choose... Maybe the kingfish actually, but all of them were incredible

Matching wines: Would recommend.

Anything I didn't like: Nope - loved it all

Would I go again: Yes!  This is actually one of those I see myself visiting multiple times, spurred on by the themed menus.

Book Club 2019 #1 - Bridge of Clay by Marcus Zusak

Hellooo!

I hope you are all doing well!

Today, we turn our attention to a relatively new thing in my life - my interstate book club.

The beginning of 2019 marked the beginning of a book club, curated by 2 of my friends, who had a desire to read more (one of them you all know & love - my meal prep buddy!).  We are a group of friends & friends of friends who live in different places around Australia, who come together online to read the same book over a period of time & then discuss it at the end of the designated time.

And I actually love it!

Aside from the social aspect that comes alongside a book club, I love having the drive to finish a certain book by a certain time.

Our first book of the year was Bridge of Clay by Marcus Zusak.

You might know this Australian author from The Book Thief?

Now, I actually haven't read The Book Thief, so I had no expectations from this new book of his.  I know some of my fellow book-clubbers did, although I'm not sure if that expectation influenced any of their opinions.

I won't go into too much detail about the book, in case you haven't read it.  But there may be some spoilers, so consider yourself warned!

The synopsis of Bridge of Clay is:

Let me tell you about our brother.
The fourth Dunbar boy named Clay.
Everything happened to him.
We were all of us changed through him.

The Dunbar boys bring each other up in a house run by their own rules. A family of ramshackle tragedy - their mother is dead, their father has fled - they love and fight, and learn to reckon with the adult world.

It is Clay, the quiet one, who will build a bridge; for his family, for his past, for his sins. He builds a bridge to transcend humanness. To survive.

A miracle and nothing less.

Markus Zusak makes his long-awaited return with a profoundly heartfelt and inventive novel about a family held together by stories, and a young life caught in the current: a boy in search of greatness, as a cure for a painful past.

- Source: www.panmacmillan.com.au

It is a book that received a lot of praise, as a strong story of love, guilt, loss, betrayal & family.

But I didn't get it.

And neither did anyone in my book club!

We aren't literary experts.  But none of s enjoyed it at all.

I, personally, found it really hard to digest.  Content aside, I like my books to paint a picture so I can visualise the story in my head as I read.  Bridge of Clay provides very few visual clues to be able to do this, so right away I struggled to connect with the story & its characters.

Below are some screenshots from our discussion (forgive us - we are new to this whole book club thing, so we aren't super sure how to do this whole book club discussion thing properly.  Please leave us hints below if you are a book club veteran!).

Have you read Bridge of Clay?

If so, what did you think?

Until next time.

So let's talk about... Keep Cups

Once I started working in an office, I realised I was dropping in to pick up a coffee every day on the way to work.  My colleagues were also doing the same.

To do some quick math, if the 3 of us had a coffee Monday - Friday, that would be 15 disposable cups a week.

Assuming we all took our annual leave and got a coffee 48 weeks of the year, that would be 720 cups a year.

If we had been doing this every day since I started working here (3.5 years), then we would have gone through 2520 disposable cups, just between the 3 of us.

That's crazy!

It was about 3 months in that we all got Keep Cups, with a little carry bag to carry them around.  So great, especially after the more recent revelation that disposable cups are not recyclable.  And even if you use a BioCup, you still have to rely on the individual disposing of it correctly so it is actually recycled.

So if you're in the market for a keep cup so that you can do your bit for the planet, here is my review of 4 different brands (yes I have a lot of keep cups haha)!

Keep Cup

Keep Cup was the first ever reusable cup I bought, and I love it!  I got the one with the glass cup because I prefer it to plastic; one of my colleagues got a plastic one because, at the time, they didn't make the glass ones in large (rest assured, they do now).

Overall, I have found them to be very durable.  I used this cup daily, and I replaced the lid only once when it started leaking (it took maybe 18 months for that to happen, which isn't bad at all).  I also replaced the glass cup once, but that was definitely user error... I accidentally threw it at the handrail in my coffee shop!

The lid is probably my favourite part of this cup.  The hard plastic lid with the plug works so well, and it is really nice to drink out of.

I think aesthetically, the cups look nice (although I don't like the new double walled look they have going at the moment, but that is just me), and there is such a vast range of colours to choose from.  I also really enjoy that you can buy parts separately, so if you lose the plug, or the lid starts to leak, or you just want a different colour, you can do so cheaply & easily.

Price wise, you're looking at anywhere from AUD$14 - $34, depending on the style you go for and the size.

Review!
Range of colours: 10/10
Durability: 9/10
Lid: 10/10
Cup: 7/10 (plastic), 9/10 (glass)
Would I recommend: 10/10

Frank Green

Frank Green is huge at the moment!  My colleague & I jumped on this band wagon when we were looking for a new cup (I was looking to downsize my medium Keep Cup, her KC lid was leaking), and, to be honest, we were pretty disappointed.

The design is pretty funky, and the leak proof lid seems like a great idea.  You can also get it with PayPass in the cup to make paying for coffee super efficient (I hate this, but some people love it).

But there are a few things that really let this cup down:
- You can't fill the cup all the way up to the top.  There is a max fill line, but trying to get baristas to not fill it up all the way is challenging.
- If you do fill it pass the max fill line, the leak proof lid isn't so leak proof.
- The lid has so many pieces (see pic below)!  It is so annoying to wash, and getting this back together properly each time is harder than you would think.  I actually stopped using the lid altogether and used the cup like a normal mug.

I also have the Frank Green water bottle... the lid is also annoying, and started leaking on me.  It does come with an app to track your water intake, but you have to tap your water bottle every time you finish it, and you just forget... great idea, but just a little bit too clunky.

Price wise you are looking at AUD$32 - $40.

Review!
Range of colours: 5/10
Durability: 6/10
Lid: 1/10
Cup: 7/10
Would I recommend: 2/10

Sol

I got this cup from an event that was being held in my venue (because who doesn't need another keep cup!), and I wanted to try out the brand because I have seen it around.

I love that this cup is big - it's like holding a hug mug.  I just love wrapping my hands around a big mug, so it works so well for me.

The lid is where this one falls short - soft silicone just isn't nice to drink out of!  I think if it was a harder silicone, it would be OK.

There isn't a huge range of colours to choose from, but certainly not a big deal.  I do also really enjoy that Sol also make water bottles, tote bags and metal straws.

Price wise, you're looking at AUD$30 for a medium (12oz) cup.

Review!
Range of colours: 4/10
Durability: 8/10
Lid: 5/10
Cup: 10/10
Would I recommend: 8/10

Pottery for the Planet

This cup belongs to my colleague - it was her replacement for the Frank Green cup.

I think the premise of this company is great - they make limited edition pottery pieces to raise funds for environmental causes.

The cups are also quite pretty.  They are handmade & painted with various designs.  Because of this, it probably is important to note that the colours & patterns will vary from the pictures on the website.

Ceramic gets hot!  Carrying this thing with a hot coffee in it everyday isn't ideal.  They do sell heat bands on the website, but it costs extra - and when these cups are already AUD$35 - 39, you don't really want to pay any more.

The lid is also soft silicone!  So annoying to drink out of again.

My colleague likes this cup, but I don't really rate it.

Review!
Range of colours: 7/10
Durability: 8/10
Lid: 1/10
Cup: 7/10
Would I recommend: 4/10

So which one would I recommend?

Honestly, I can't stop going back to Keep Cup!  I have shopped around and tried new things from time to time, but my Keep Cups are still my favourite.  There are many options for different colours and styles, and I really really like the lid to drink out of.

If it were possible to get the cup shape of the Sol cup combined with the Keep Cup lid, that would be the ultimate, because I just love a really fat mug to hug!  But failing that,  I would highly recommend the Keep Cup.

Fine Dining Restaurants: O Bar

At the beginning of October, Mack planned a date night to O Bar, in Sydney's CBD.

He doesn't venture to the city ever, for anything, so this was a pretty big deal haha.

O Bar is situated on level 47, and it revolves! So you get a full 360 of Sydney, which is pretty special. The day we went was in the middle of Sydney's exceptionally rainy week, but it was still spectacular.

We opted for a cocktail on arrival, and then selected the degustation menu for dinner (8 courses).

Lemon meringue cocktail!

If you are planning on heading to O Bar, note that if you want to go for the degustation on a Friday or Saturday, you have to pre-order it. We were there on a Wednesday and we ordered it on the spot.

We didn't go for the matching wines this time around; instead we opted for around 3 drinks each (mostly cocktails, with a wine with mains).

Here we go - the degustation menu from O Bar.

Oysters, served with sweet & sour apple dressing

 Fermented vegetables

Spiced Ruby tuna tartare, black lentils, cultured buttermilk

Cured Cervena venison loin, charred brassicas, crisp deer milk skin

WA marron, warrigal greens, chickpea miso butter

Wagyu rib blade, pickled baby carrots, fermented daikon, puffed tendon

Rhubarb & custard, smoked hay ice cream

 O Lamington

After the 8 courses, Mack decided he wanted another dessert... so we also got the hot raspberry souffle.  Definitely would recommend haha.  SO good.

So what did we think?

So delicious!

The food was amazing, the cocktails were delicious, and the staff were friendly and professional.  Even when they got a little busy and service got a little slower, everything was still running smoothly.  The view was pretty special - in the 3 hours or so we were there, we did 2 full rotations.  I imagine if it wasn't so rainy, the sunsets would be pretty special up there.  Pro tip - wait until your table spins around to near the bar to go to the toilet so you don't have to walk all the way round :)

Overall, a really fabulous evening!

Fine Dining Restaurant Mini Review:

Was it worth the money ($145pp for the degustation, plus drinks and a bonus dessert): absolutely

Did I love every dish: Yes!

Favourite dish: savoury favourite was the marron, dessert fave was actually the bonus souffle we ordered additionally.

Matching wines: this is available, but we didn't do it - I don't necessarily think it needs it.

Anything I didn't like: nope - everything was amazing!

Would I go again: would love to.

Fine Dining Restaurants: Cucina Locale

This week we head to a totally unexpected, but amazing discovery we found back in June when Tara came up here the weekend when I bought my wedding dress.

We were looking for a fine dining restaurant close by so Tara could finally take me out for my birthday (which is in February... haha).  We try and do two fancy restaurants a year, and we hadn't been to one yet!

We were on Google, and it said there was a fine dining restaurant in Blacktown.  Of all places, Blacktown.  And a revolving restaurant at that.  So SO random!  We were so intrigued that we couldn't not go and check it out.

So to Cucina Locale we went.

And it was amazing!

We ordered a different dish each for each course, and then ate half of each, so we could try more of the dishes.  Such a good plan!

So here we go - the a la carte menu we sampled when we went there back in June.

Old fashioned - yes it's on fire!

Pan roasted scallops with artichoke puree, truffle oil, pork crumb

Beetroot carpaccio, balsamic, goats cheese, walnuts

Duck breast, pumpkin, honey, fennel, orange, jus

 Wild caught snapper en papliotte

 Lemon meringue tart

Chocolate brownie, Greek halva, pistachios vanilla gelato

Affogatos to finish it off!

What did we think?

Loved. It.

Seriously.  Sometimes I think going somewhere with absolutely no expectations can be a good thing.  Every dish was delicious, the cocktails were delightful, and yes we had two desserts!  The ambiance was also lovely, with a guy playing the piano.  The service staff looked a little lost at times, but they were friendly and professional.  I would definitely recommend ordering a la carte - they did have some tasting menus, but they were meat, or seafood or vegetarian, and they didn't have a combination tasting menu.  Which was a little weird.  But anyway.  We made our own tasting menu and it was great.

Would also recommend checking the sunset time on the day you are going.  The revolving restaurant has quite a view, which we would have been able to enjoy a lot more if it had been light upon arrival and we could have watched the sun set :).

Fine Dining Restaurant Mini Review:
Was it worth the money (around $300 for 2 people): yes!
Did I love every dish: Loved everything
Matching wines: They don't have this option available
Anything I didn't like: the service could maybe have been a little better, but it wasn't detrimental to the experience - also should have gone before sunset!
Would I go again: Yes!  We actually are going again in November :)

This series takes a hiatus - it will be back after our next fine dining adventure (which I think will be O Bar in Sydney, but watch this space).
